Since March of last year, the global coronavirus pandemic has forced companies all over the world to implement voluntary or mandatory work-from-home policies. For many people, the work-from-home lifestyle is fairly new, forcing some changes to daily work habits and routines. While working remotely has many benefits, it can also be very challenging, especially for those who’ve never worked at home before.

Mirella Mordoki is a highly respected entrepreneur located in Fullerton, California, that understands the challenges of working at home. She shares ways you can make working at home for you, even if you’ve never done so before. Whether you’re just getting started or have been operating remotely for some time, Mordoki shares three ways to set yourself up for success.

Keep a Consistent Work Schedule

Although it may seem like your normal working hours have completely shifted — especially if you have a child at home — it’s important to maintain a consistent working schedule at home, every day.

Mirella Mordoki recommends following these tips to ensure consistent working hours while at home:

· Set your alarm for the same time each day to get up and get yourself mentally prepared to start working

· Start work at the same time each day

· Time block two to three times throughout the day to schedule in mental breaks (this could include a brisk walk outdoors or some quiet time away from your work related tasks)

· Plan to work for the same amount of hours each day

· Set up automatic time-tracking apps, such as RescueTime or Toggl Track, so that you can check in on whether you’re sticking to your daily work schedule

· Don’t overwork yourself

· Be sure to wrap up at the same time each day, so that you can come back to your work the following day with excitement

Create an Office Space

Having a separate room to create an office in your home would be the easiest way to dedicate a place to spend your time on work related tasks. However, not everyone has an extra or vacant room in their home to do this. With that said, you can still dedicate a place or nook in your home to set up a desk for work use only, says Mirella Mordoki.

For example, when your laptop is plugged in at your desk, it’s work time. When it’s on your lap, or somewhere else in the home, it’s personal time. Bottom line — creating an office space will allow you to get into “work mode” more easily than if you were doing work while sitting on the couch.

Meet Virtually with Colleagues

If you’re working at home right now, it’s probably because you’re doing what you can to keep your distance from others. And while it may be the safest option, working at home can still be quite isolating. People forget they need to be around others, notes Mirella Mordoki. As a solution, she suggests setting up a video call with your colleagues or manager one or two times per week to check in. You’d be surprised at how motivated and encouraged you’ll feel after meeting with your team.
